The White Buffalo

What makes a legend? I'm not sure what the formula is, but I'm pretty sure I'm seeing one in the making. Los Angeles-based musician, The White Buffalo , a.k.a. Jake Smith, is one of those rare singer-songwriters who has an uncanny ability to transport you to another place or time. Read More

Questions with The White Buffalo

1. How long have you been performing?
I've been performing for 6 or 7 years now. Much of my touring I've done solo acoustic. Traveled all over the world... Japan, Australia, much of the US, and Europe. It's a pretty low maintenance existence. Just a guitar and some cables. This east coast run will be my first to bring the band outside of my home state of California. It's still a small operation, a trio, Tommy Andrews on bass, Matt Lynott on drums and me playing guitar and singing.

2. Do you prefer solo or playing with a band?
They are both satisfying in there own right. There is a freedom and an intimacy with playing solo. It's definitely a bit more challenging to get people moving. The energy and dynamics of the band elevate the whole experience both for me and the audience. It's a much bigger sound then most people are expecting out an acoustic trio.

3. Which song do audiences seem to enjoy the most?
It seems Love Song #1 is a crowd pleaser. Gets em' singing along most every night. Some of the more raucous unrecorded material like "The Pilot" and 'Hold the Line" are quickly becoming crowd favorites.

4. As you first started out, did you ever feel frustrated and wonder if this was ever to be?
I'm still frustrated but early on it wasn't a goal to really make it a living. It used to be, having enough money for a pint and some beer was enough, sleeping on couches, generally fucking off. It was dream then. Now it's how I pay the bills. Maybe not as romantic as it once was. As I get a bit older and my family grows my priorities change along with my frustrations.
5. Who are some of your favorite artists to listen to?
I really love singer/songwriters where words are as important as melody. Townes Van Zandt, Leonard Cohen, Dylan, Elliot Smith, Waylon Jennings. As for more modern acts The National, Wilco, Bon Iver, Dr. Dog, Arcade Fire.
