"What Does Guitarist Jim Campilongo Sound Like?"

Submitted by admin on Wed, 04/15/2009

I feel like I get asked this question often enough that I should have an answer at the ready. Jim doesn't sound like anybody, so i have crafted a list of vaguely epic similes to give our lazy listeners an idea of what they are missing.
Jim sounds like:

- an Easter Egg hunt that culminates in the discovery and subsequent snorting of Jimmy Hoffa's remains
- Lou Gossett Jr (as Jerry in Enemy Mine) and Michelangelo Batio idly picking at a petit four with shrimp forks at the bar at Le Grenouille
- discovering your grandmother in an Exploited t-shirt eating your matchbox cars
- meeting the girl of your dreams on okcupid, finding out she is your sister, then finding out she's not really your sister, then blowing her off before you hook up and finding out she really is your sister after all
- roy somebody-or-other

Not bad !

Your queries

To Susan: I have to say, periods of "musical nomadism" are truly enlightening and assist in keeping your musical muscle toned. Putting on a different hat every day to play with different folks is exhilarating. I spelled that right, right? I mean, there would be a red line under it if I misspelled it. Someone let me know what the url is for google.com when they get a chance. Until then I'll just take a chance. ex-hil-arate. I wonder what birds think about.

i gots a question

You've played with such a variety of musicians and that makes me wonder about your opinion of musical nomadism vs sticking with a band long-term.

You've played with tons of people. Nomadism vs. joining a band-- what are your thoughts about the pros and cons of each?

stereotypes about female bassists?

How do you deal with stereotypes about female bassists? There are many that I have heard over the years, as a fan of womyn in music. Were I a bassist myself, I might find some of these stereotypes (to be listed at bottom of comment) very irritating. This might negatively impact the way that I delicately strum and/or pluck the strings of my bass. So, basically, how do you subvert these rampant stereotypes in your day to day life.

(list of possible stereotypes)

Female Bassists...
are too aggressive
give bad directions
drink bathtub gin
are born with a credit score of 345
have extra sweat glands
can't jump

Hearing Jim makes me wanna

Hearing Jim makes me wanna shoot a gun, in a good way.
