A restless soul needs an outlet. A muse needs suitor. The courtship between writer and song is a permanent and ever growing relationship, one in which Brian Dolzani cherishes every moment. Brian’s 2010 self-released record Brian Dolzani (Plum Street Records) is evidence of more than ten years of writing, performing, releasing indie records and honing his craft, a craft worthy of comparisons to such iconic and wide-reaching artists (and fellow soul searchers) Neil Young, Tom Petty, and David Gray. Brian's voice is sweetly and vulnerably longing, touching a place in you that you thought you had stuffed away in order to tend to the chores and demands of the day. In other words, Brian's voice and songs cut deep into an emotional land where angels and devils, as well as mere mortal men and women wrestle, tease, hurt, and love.
Brian has been performing in and around his home state of Connecticut and throughout New England for over ten years, playing to diverse audiences, making fans, building his reputation as a true professional, a lover of song and intimate, moving, and often haunting performances. One such performance was a recent near sell-out performance at his exceptional hometown venue, the Fairfield Theater Company in winter of '09. Brian headlined in front of 200 of his closest friends and fans, giving a captivating, sometimes heartbreaking, always thrillingly candid performance, highlighting his instantly relatable songs and deeply affecting personality, completely solo, just him and his guitar. The buzz in his town and among his audience is infectious, and spreading.
The Fairfield Weekly calls Brian 'A bookish and bespectacled Bob Dylan', 'vulnerable' and melodically 'creative'. Brian did in fact hone his songwriting skills listening to such giants as Bob Dylan and Neil Young. 'I was immediately drawn to their sense of otherworldliness,' Brian explains. 'I knew I felt the same way, I felt they way they sounded, and I knew that my expression and life had to be lived on that peculiar and intoxicating planet. The planet of music, toying with the creative act itself.'
The longing and pain often found in Brian's music stems from his tragic loss of his father when Brian was just fifteen. His mother was also badly and permanently injured and literally overnight his life was turned upside down. Already a 'sensitive soul', this external proof of life's fragility firmly instilled in him the dichotomy between life and death, one he often attempts to reconcile through song. Songs such as 'Summer' and 'When I Sleep' directly confront loss and wanting to reach across boundaries that wish to keep us tied to a mortal and mundane existence. Other songs like 'Blindly Fall In Love,' 'Trying', and 'Lovers' infuse our everyday lives with scrutiny and spirit, pulling back the curtain to attempt to see what lies behind our seemingly simple lives.
If you are compelled to investigate new authentic, intriguing, and expressive voices in music such as Death Cab For Cutie, The Decemberists, and Joe Pug (all of whom Brian has been compared to), then you would do yourself a great disservice to miss Brian on his way up the ladder into American musical consciousness. His is a gift born from authenticity, vulnerability, talent, and craft, and he is boundless with energy and excitement in the thrill of performing for you.
